A base camp for adventures

The Carrshield Camping Barn is the upper floor of 18th Century Barney Craig Mine Shop located just outside Carrshield in Northumberland. It has accommodation for up to 18 people in three separate rooms, each with a wood-burning stove and a raised wooden sleeping platform. The rooms are individually secure, but can be interconnected, making it ideal for larger or mixed groups.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Heated dormitory sleeping for 18
  • Three separate rooms with sleeping benches, which are independently secure and can be booked individually
  • Or book all three rooms and use them as a connected community sleeping space
  • Each room has electrical lighting and a double electrical socket (for low power device charging only e.g. phones and torches). 
  • Log burning stove in each room (prices include a basket of logs for each stove and additional logs can be purchased if required)
Shared toilets + cooking area
  • ​​Composting toilet
  • Communal 'galley' room for cooking with stone benches for your own stoves to sit on
  • Running hot and cold water for hand-washing in the toilet/kitchen area. (no food waste should be put down the waste pipe please, as it is a water soak away not a proper full drain)
  • Each room has a wooden clothes dryer on a pulley. 
Other facilities
  • Ordnance Survey map of the area in the kitchen for route planning.
  • Walking maps and local information folder​
  • The outside sink for washing with bicycle safe bars to lock bikes onto.
  • Car parking
  • Additional outdoor camping space may be available by prior arrangement​

WHAT YOU DON'T GET

  • NO MATTRESSES or BEDDING The wooden sleeping platforms are hard so you will need camping mats.   The stoves make the rooms nice and cosy but don't forget your sleeping bags! ​
  • NO SHOWERS Just hot and cold water for hand-washing in the toilet/kitchen area​
  • NO SHOPS Nearest shops and pubs are in Allendale (approx 10 min drive), Whitfield, Nenthead, Alston or Allenheads (pub only). 
  • NO PHONES There is limited mobile phone reception in this remote location.

TARIFF
Duck – sleeps 8, £65 per night
Lapwing - sleeps 6, £55 per night
Curlew - sleeps 4, £45 per night

If available, all three rooms sleeping up to 18 people, can be booked simultaneously  - at a discounted total cost of £135 per night. Simply enter the promocode: THEWHOLEBARNPLEASE when booking

​Price includes baskets of logs for the stoves (additional logs can be purchased if required)

TO MAKE A BOOKING
Please click on the Book your stay tab in the menu.  On this page you can check availability on FreetoBook and make a booking for your stay.  Your booking will not be accepted unless it is paid in full via the Stripe payment system.  You only require a debit card to do this.

Check out time: 10:00am 
Dogs:  We have no problem with accommodating dogs
Infants (under 3): This accommodation is not really suitable for the very young due to inter-room noise and the presence of hot stoves
Cancellation policy:  50% refund if cancelled more than 48 hours before booking date

The Barney Craig Mine Shop, housing the Carrshield Camping Barn, is owned and operated by Allen Valleys Enterprise (AVEL),  a Community Benefit Society set up to support projects that will safeguard the legacy of the Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership project and allow income generated to be used for the benefit of the local community.
